It didn’t take long for internet sleuths to dive down the rabbit hole of conspiracies surrounding the arrest of Luigi Mangione for the murder of the health insurance CEO. His criminal case became a worldwide obsession, especially for the true crime junkies – and they have been hard at work putting all the hearsay together. Almost immediately, buzz about the number 286 started spreading across social media. Once the facts started rolling in, what started as a simple open-shut case turned into a Scorcese screenplay.

Here are some of the theories from the internet.
Pokemon

At the top of his X profile, there are three pictures – a Pokemon, an X-Ray, and a photo of himself. At first, my takeaway was that Luigi likes Pokemon. But when in the official Pokemon database, the Pokemon is named Breloom, the 286th character.

Social Media
On his X account, he had posted 285 times by the time he was arrested (Basically 286).

Health Insurance
National Insurance Awareness Day -June 28th is National Insurance Awareness Day. Writing the date by number and in reverse order, June 28 (6/28) is 286.
Health insurance denial claim code – Insurance companies use the code 286 when denying the appeal with the insurance holders’ claims.

Religion
The Bible – Proverbs 28:6 reads: “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.”

The Quran – Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 286 (2:286 Quran) translates to “Allah does not lay a responsibility on anyone beyond his capacity.[338] In his favour shall be whatever good each one does, and against him whatever evil he does.[339] (Believers! Pray thus to your Lord): “Our Lord! Take us not to task if we forget or commit mistakes.”
On MyIslam.org, the following are referenced in the translation above:
338 – Man’s answerability to God is limited by the extent of his ability. If a man does not have the ability to do a certain thing, God will not take him to task for not having performed it. In the same way, if it is really beyond a man’s ability to abstain from something, God will not blame him for having failed to abstain from it. It should be noted here that man will not be the final judge as to whether he had the ability to do something or not. Such judgment will be made by God alone.
339 – This is the second fundamental principle of God’s law of retribution. Every man will be rewarded for the services he has rendered, none will be rewarded for services rendered by others. The same applies to punishment. It is the one who is guilty who will be punished. It is possible, however, that if a man has initiated either good or bad practices, they will continue to affect people’s lives. The resulting good and bad deeds of people will be reckoned either to their credit or against them, since they are clearly related to their efforts and actions. It is impossible, however, that a map should be either rewarded for an act of goodness or punished for an act of evil in which he has had no share – neither by intent nor practical action. The requital of acts is not transferable.
Location

McDonald’s – Finally, some people online claimed the distance between the location of the shooting in NYC and the McDonald’s where Mangione was arrested is 286 miles. However, according to Google Maps, the distance is actually 279 miles.
Truth or Conspiracy?
Without even standing trial yet, Luigi Mangione’s case will certainly be a long and complicated one that will have its own reference in history books. But will he be seen as a hero or a villain? That answer may surprise you, but only time will tell.
On a related note, it hasn’t even been six months, and already Law & Order aired an episode “inspired by” Luigi Mangione. Read about it here:
